Proper leveling of JennAir column refrigerators and freezers is essential for door alignment, efficient operation, and proper drainage. Learn the correct procedure.
Why Leveling Matters
JennAir column refrigerators and freezer columns are designed to be installed flush with surrounding cabinetry for a built-in appearance. Even a slight tilt can cause the door to swing open on its own, prevent it from closing securely, create uneven gaps in the panel overlay, and allow condensation to pool instead of draining properly. Taking the time to level the unit during installation — or correcting it afterward — prevents a range of performance issues.
Tools Needed
- A reliable bubble level (at least 24 inches long)
- Adjustable wrench or pliers for the leveling legs
- Flashlight to see beneath the unit
- A helper to stabilize the unit while adjustments are made
Step 1 — Check Current Level
- Place the level on top of the unit, running left to right. Note whether the bubble sits center.
- Turn the level 90 degrees to check front to back. JennAir column units should be slightly tilted back — approximately one-quarter inch higher in the front than the rear — so the door closes by gravity.
- Open the door and release it from about 45 degrees. It should swing closed on its own. If it stays open or swings open further, the unit is tilting forward.
Step 2 — Adjust the Leveling Legs
- The leveling legs are located at the bottom front corners of the unit. Access them by removing the toe-kick grille if one is installed.
- To raise a corner, turn the leveling leg clockwise. To lower it, turn counterclockwise.
- Make small adjustments — a quarter turn at a time — and recheck with the level after each change.
- Once the unit is level side to side and slightly back-tilted front to back, test the door swing again.
Aligning Side-by-Side Columns
When a JennAir refrigerator column is installed next to a freezer column, the tops and doors must align precisely. After leveling each unit independently:
- Check that the top surfaces are flush by laying the level across both units
- Verify that door handles are at the same height and the gap between doors is even from top to bottom
- If panel overlays are installed, confirm that the panels sit flush and the reveal is consistent
Securing the Unit
After leveling, JennAir column units should be secured to the surrounding cabinetry using the anti-tip brackets and mounting screws included with the unit. This prevents the unit from shifting when heavy items are loaded onto shelves or when doors are opened forcefully. Refer to your installation guide for bracket placement specific to your model.
