When a JennAir gas range burner clicks but does not light, or fails to click at all, several common causes can be checked before calling for service.
How JennAir Gas Ignition Works
JennAir gas ranges use an electronic spark ignition system. When you turn a burner knob to the “Lite” position, the control module sends voltage to a spark electrode next to the burner. You should hear a rapid clicking sound and see a small spark jumping from the electrode to the burner base. Once the gas ignites, releasing the knob from the “Lite” position stops the clicking and the flame remains lit.
Scenario 1: Clicking But No Flame
If you hear clicking and see sparks but the gas does not ignite:
- Burner cap misalignment — remove the cap and reseat it so it sits flat and centered on the burner base. Even a slight tilt can direct gas away from the spark.
- Wet burner — moisture from cleaning or a boil-over can prevent ignition. Dry the burner cap and electrode area thoroughly with a cloth, then try again.
- Clogged burner ports — food debris in the small holes around the burner cap prevents gas from reaching the spark. Clean the ports with a straight pin or paper clip.
- Gas supply issue — verify that the gas shut-off valve behind the range is fully open. If other gas appliances in the home also fail to work, contact your gas utility.
Scenario 2: No Clicking at All
If turning the knob produces no clicking sound:
- Power supply — even though the range runs on gas, the ignition system requires 120-volt AC power. Check that the range is plugged in and the outlet is live. Test the outlet with another small appliance.
- Tripped breaker — check your electrical panel for a tripped breaker on the kitchen range circuit.
- Faulty spark module — the spark module generates high voltage for all burner electrodes. If none of the burners click, the module may have failed and needs replacement.
- Damaged spark electrode — if only one burner fails to click, the electrode for that specific burner may be cracked or the wire disconnected. A technician can test and replace individual electrodes.
Scenario 3: Continuous Clicking After Flame Is Lit
If the igniter keeps clicking even after the burner is lit:
- Moisture around the switch — liquid that has seeped under the cooktop to the burner switch can cause continuous sparking. Allow the area to dry completely; avoid using the range until clicking stops.
- Stuck burner switch — the switch mechanism may be stuck in the ignite position. Power off the range and try rotating the knob back to off and then to lite again. If the problem persists, the switch needs replacement.
When to Call for Service
If you have ruled out the common causes above — the burner is clean, seated correctly, dry, and the power supply is confirmed — the issue likely involves the spark module, an individual electrode, or a wiring fault within the cooktop. These are not user-serviceable components and should be diagnosed by a certified JennAir technician.
