JennAir gas ranges with brass burners and cast iron grates require specific cleaning methods to maintain performance and appearance. Learn the proper technique.
About JennAir Gas Burners
JennAir gas ranges — available in both NOIR and RISE design expressions — feature high-output brass burners that deliver precise flame control. The brass burner caps and cast iron continuous grates are premium components that require careful cleaning to prevent damage and maintain their finish. Regular cleaning also ensures even flame distribution and prevents ignition problems.
Daily Maintenance
After each use, once the cooktop has cooled completely:
- Wipe the cooktop surface around the burners with a damp cloth and mild dish soap
- Remove any boiled-over food from the burner caps before it hardens
- Avoid pushing spills into the burner ports — wipe away from them
Deep Cleaning the Brass Burner Caps
- Make sure all burners are off and completely cool.
- Lift the cast iron grates off the cooktop and set them aside.
- Lift each brass burner cap straight up — they sit on top of the burner base and are not fastened.
- Soak the burner caps in warm water with a few drops of dish soap for 15 to 20 minutes.
- Use a soft nylon brush or toothbrush to remove food residue. Pay attention to the small ports around the perimeter of each cap — clogged ports cause uneven or yellow flames.
- Use a straightened paper clip or the cleaning tool provided with the range to clear individual ports that are blocked.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
- Dry each cap completely — any moisture in the ports can prevent ignition. Allow to air dry for at least 30 minutes or use a lint-free cloth.
- Replace the caps on their corresponding burner bases, ensuring they sit flat and centered.
Cleaning Cast Iron Grates
- Wash the grates by hand in warm, soapy water. Do not place them in the dishwasher — the harsh detergent strips the matte enamel coating.
- For baked-on grease, make a paste of baking soda and water. Apply it to the affected areas, let it sit for 20 minutes, then scrub with a nylon brush.
- Rinse completely and dry immediately to prevent rust.
- Do not use oven cleaner, steel wool, or abrasive pads on cast iron grates.
Restoring Brass Finish
Over time, brass burner caps will naturally develop a patina. This is normal and does not affect performance. If you prefer a brighter appearance, use a brass polish specifically designed for unlacquered brass. Apply it sparingly with a soft cloth, buff gently, and rinse thoroughly to ensure no polish residue enters the burner ports.
Reassembly Check
After cleaning, light each burner and verify the flame is blue and evenly distributed around the full circumference. A yellow or uneven flame indicates a cap is misaligned or a port is still clogged. Turn the burner off, let it cool, and correct the issue before using the range for cooking.
