How to Use the Self-Clean Cycle on a JennAir Range

How the Self-Clean Cycle Works

The self-clean function on JennAir dual-fuel and all-electric ranges heats the oven cavity to approximately 880 degrees Fahrenheit. At this extreme temperature, food residue, grease, and spills are incinerated into a fine ash that can be wiped away once the cycle is complete and the oven has cooled. The oven door locks automatically at the start of the cycle and remains locked until the interior temperature drops to a safe level.

Before Starting Self-Clean

1. Remove all racks, pans, and accessories — JennAir oven racks may warp or discolor at self-clean temperatures. Remove the broiler pan, temperature probes, and any aluminum foil linings.
2. Remove the brass burner caps and grates from the cooktop — while the cooktop surface is separate from the oven cavity, the heat generated during self-clean can rise and affect items sitting on top.
3. Wipe up large spills and loose debris — the self-clean cycle handles residue and grease films, but large chunks of food can smoke heavily or even catch fire. Use a damp cloth to remove the worst of it.
4. Ventilate the kitchen — open a window or turn on the range hood. The cycle produces smoke and odor, especially during the first use or when significant buildup is present.
5. Keep children and pets away from the range — the exterior surfaces, particularly the oven door, become extremely hot during the cycle.

Starting the Cycle

1. On models with an LCD display, tap “Clean” and select the duration. JennAir typically offers a 2-hour, 3-hour, and 4-hour option. Choose a longer cycle for heavy soiling.
2. On models with knob controls, turn the oven function knob to “Clean” and press the start button.
3. The door will lock within 15 to 30 seconds. The lock indicator will illuminate on the display or control panel.
4. The cycle runs automatically. Do not attempt to open the door or cancel the cycle prematurely unless there is a safety concern — in that case, press “Cancel” and allow the oven to cool until the door unlocks.

After the Cycle

1. Wait for the oven to cool completely. The door lock will release automatically when the interior reaches approximately 550 degrees, but the oven will still be hot. Wait until it is fully cool to the touch.
2. Open the door and use a damp cloth or sponge to wipe out the fine gray ash from the oven floor and walls.
3. Replace the oven racks and any accessories you removed.

How Often to Self-Clean

JennAir recommends running the self-clean cycle no more than once a month. Excessive use accelerates wear on the door gasket, oven sensor, and locking mechanism. For light maintenance between cycles, wipe the oven interior with a baking soda and water solution.
