How to Use the JennAir Speed Oven for Faster Cooking 1

The JennAir speed oven combines convection, microwave, and broil functions to reduce cooking time by up to 50%. Learn how to use each mode effectively.

What Makes the Speed Oven Different

JennAir’s connected wall oven lineup includes a speed oven option — a compact oven that combines convection heating with microwave energy. This dual approach allows you to roast, bake, and broil in roughly half the time of a conventional oven while still achieving browning and crispiness that a microwave alone cannot produce. The speed oven is typically installed as the upper unit in a double wall oven configuration.

Available Cooking Modes

  • Speed Cook — combines convection heat and microwave energy simultaneously. Best for roasting meats, casseroles, and baked dishes. Reduces cook time by approximately 40 to 50 percent.
  • Convection Only — uses only the convection fan and heating element. Operates like a standard convection oven. Use for delicate baking where microwave energy might affect texture.
  • Microwave Only — standard microwave operation with multiple power levels. Use for reheating, defrosting, and quick heating tasks.
  • Broil — uses the upper heating element for broiling. The speed oven cavity is smaller than the lower oven, so items are closer to the element and broil faster.
  • Sensor Reheat — automatically detects moisture and adjusts time and power to reheat without overcooking.

Tips for Best Results in Speed Cook Mode

  1. Use the correct cookware. Metal pans and baking sheets are recommended for Speed Cook mode because the convection element provides the browning. Do not use metal in Microwave Only mode. Glass and ceramic work in all modes.
  2. Lower the temperature. Because microwave energy heats food from within while convection heats from outside, you can typically reduce the temperature by 25 degrees compared to a conventional recipe and still finish faster.
  3. Do not cover food with foil. Aluminum foil blocks microwave energy and defeats the purpose of Speed Cook mode. If you need to prevent over-browning, switch to Convection Only for the last portion of cooking.
  4. Reduce recipe time by 30 to 50 percent as a starting point, then adjust based on results. Check food early — the combination of energy sources can cook faster than expected.
  5. Use the included rack — the speed oven comes with a specific rack that allows microwave energy to circulate underneath the cookware.

Common Mistakes

  • Using plastic containers not rated for convection temperatures — they may melt
  • Overcrowding the cavity — the speed oven is compact and airflow is critical
  • Running Speed Cook mode with an empty oven — the microwave energy needs a food load to absorb it
  • Expecting identical results to a full-size oven — the smaller cavity and dual energy require some recipe adjustment

Cleaning the Speed Oven

Most JennAir speed ovens do not have a self-clean cycle due to the microwave components inside. Clean the interior manually with a damp cloth and mild dish soap. For baked-on splatters, use a baking soda paste and a non-abrasive sponge. Wipe the ceiling carefully around the microwave stirrer cover.
