How to Replace a Cracked Ceramic Glass on a JennAir Cooktop 1

A cracked glass surface on a JennAir induction or electric cooktop is a safety hazard. Learn when and how to replace it.

Is a Cracked Cooktop Surface Dangerous?

Yes. A cracked ceramic glass cooktop surface should not be used. On electric radiant and induction models, cracks allow moisture to reach the electrical components beneath the glass, creating a risk of electrical shock. Even hairline cracks can propagate rapidly under heat stress. If you notice any crack, chip, or fracture in the glass surface, stop using the cooktop immediately and disconnect power at the breaker.

Common Causes of Glass Damage

  • Impact — dropping a heavy pan, jar, or utensil onto the glass surface
  • Thermal shock — placing a frozen pan on a very hot cooking zone, or spilling cold liquid on a hot surface
  • Improper cookware — rough-bottomed cast iron or stoneware can scratch and weaken the glass over time
  • Excessive weight — standing on the cooktop or placing extremely heavy items on it (during kitchen remodeling, for example)
  • Manufacturing defect — rare, but hairline stress fractures can occasionally be present from the factory and manifest later

Can You Replace Just the Glass?

On most JennAir cooktop models, the ceramic glass surface is available as a separate replacement part. However, on some models — particularly induction cooktops where the glass is bonded to the induction coil assembly — the glass and element assembly must be replaced as a unit. Check with JennAir parts or an authorized service provider using your model number to determine which applies to your cooktop.

Replacement Overview

This is a complex repair that typically requires a certified technician. The general process involves:

  1. Disconnecting power at the breaker and, for gas models with an electric cooktop section, closing the gas supply.
  2. Removing the cooktop from the countertop by loosening the mounting brackets from below.
  3. Placing the cooktop upside down on a padded surface.
  4. Removing the screws and clips that secure the glass to the base frame.
  5. Carefully lifting the cracked glass away from the heating elements and wiring below.
  6. Placing the new glass panel onto the base, aligning it with the mounting points.
  7. Reattaching all clips, screws, and sealing strips.
  8. Reinstalling the cooktop in the countertop and restoring connections.

Cost Considerations

Replacement ceramic glass panels for JennAir cooktops range from approximately $400 to $900 depending on the model and size. Labor typically adds another $150 to $300. In some cases, if the cooktop is older and the glass panel is no longer available, you may need to consider a full cooktop replacement. Preventing Future Damage

  • Always lift cookware — never slide it across the glass
  • Use cookware with smooth, flat bottoms
  • Do not use the cooktop as a cutting board, counter extension, or work surface
  • Keep the glass clean to prevent grit from acting as an abrasive under cookware
  • Do not place anything other than cookware on the cooktop, even when it is off
