The JennAir TriFecta wash system uses three spray arms for complete coverage. Learn how to keep each component clean for optimal washing performance.
Understanding the TriFecta Wash System
JennAir dishwashers equipped with the TriFecta wash system use three independent wash arms — one at the bottom, one in the middle, and one at the top of the tub. Each arm targets a specific rack zone, providing full coverage that eliminates the need to hand-rinse dishes before loading. Over time, hard water deposits, food particles, and grease can clog the spray arm nozzles and reduce wash performance. Regular maintenance keeps the system working at its best.
Monthly Spray Arm Cleaning
- Open the dishwasher and remove both racks.
- Bottom spray arm: the bottom arm is usually held in place by a retaining cap or nut. Turn it counterclockwise and lift the arm off the hub.
- Middle spray arm: this arm is attached to the underside of the upper rack or to a separate tower. Depending on the model, it may snap off, unscrew, or release with a locking tab.
- Top spray arm: this arm is mounted to the ceiling of the tub. Reach up and turn it counterclockwise to remove it, or release the locking clip.
- Hold each arm under running water and inspect the small spray holes. Use a toothpick or fine wire to clear any holes that are clogged with debris or mineral buildup.
- Soak the arms in a basin of warm water mixed with white vinegar (equal parts) for 30 minutes to dissolve hard water deposits.
- Rinse thoroughly, shake out excess water, and reinstall each arm. Make sure they spin freely by rotating them by hand.
Cleaning the Filter Assembly
JennAir dishwashers use a multi-part filter at the bottom of the tub to capture food debris and prevent it from recirculating:
- Remove the bottom rack and bottom spray arm.
- Twist the cylindrical upper filter counterclockwise and lift it out.
- Lift out the flat lower filter beneath it.
- Rinse both filters under warm running water. Use a soft brush to remove stuck-on food. Do not use a wire brush, as it can damage the fine mesh.
- Inspect the filter well (the area where the filters sit) for any debris and wipe it clean.
- Reinstall the lower filter first, then the upper filter. Turn the upper filter clockwise until it locks.
Running a Cleaning Cycle
Once a month, run an empty dishwasher cycle with a dishwasher cleaning tablet or two cups of white vinegar placed in a dishwasher-safe container on the top rack. Use the hottest wash cycle available. This removes grease and mineral buildup from internal components, hoses, and the wash pump.
Signs the TriFecta System Needs Attention
- Dishes on one rack come out clean while another rack has residue — indicates a clogged spray arm for that zone
- White film or spots on glassware — hard water deposits, often resolved by cleaning the spray arms and adjusting rinse aid settings
- Gritty residue on dishes — the filter is clogged or not installed properly
- Standing water at the bottom after a cycle — the filter or drain path may be blocked
