Regular cleaning prevents odors, staining, and performance issues in your JennAir built-in microwave. Learn the best methods for interior and exterior surfaces.
Why Regular Cleaning Matters
Food splatters inside a microwave absorb microwave energy during subsequent uses, which reduces heating efficiency and can cause hot spots or even arcing. Baked-on residue becomes progressively harder to remove the longer it stays. JennAir built-in microwaves feature a stainless steel interior that is durable but can stain if neglected. Cleaning the microwave after each significant use is the easiest approach.
Steam Cleaning Method — Best for Routine Cleaning
- Fill a microwave-safe bowl with two cups of water and two tablespoons of white vinegar or the juice of one lemon.
- Place the bowl in the center of the microwave.
- Run at full power for 3 to 5 minutes until the water is boiling and the interior is filled with steam. The steam loosens baked-on food and grease.
- Do not open the door immediately — let the steam work for another 5 minutes with the door closed.
- Open the door carefully (the bowl will be very hot) and remove the bowl with oven mitts.
- Wipe down all interior surfaces with a damp microfiber cloth. Most residue should come off easily. For stubborn spots, use a paste of baking soda and water on a soft sponge.
- Remove and wash the turntable and turntable ring with warm soapy water. Dry and replace.
Cleaning the Interior Without Steam
If you prefer not to use the steam method:
- Mix a solution of warm water and mild dish soap.
- Dampen a soft cloth or sponge with the solution and wipe all interior surfaces — ceiling, walls, floor, and door interior.
- For grease, apply a small amount of baking soda directly to the cloth and scrub gently.
- Rinse the cloth with plain water and wipe all surfaces again to remove soap residue.
- Dry with a clean cloth.
Cleaning the Exterior
JennAir built-in microwaves typically have a stainless steel exterior that matches the surrounding cabinetry or wall oven:
- Wipe the exterior with a damp microfiber cloth.
- For fingerprints and smudges, use a stainless steel cleaner. Spray it on the cloth, not directly on the appliance, to avoid getting liquid into the vent openings.
- Wipe in the direction of the grain of the stainless steel for a streak-free finish.
- Clean the control panel with a barely damp cloth. Do not spray cleaner directly on the controls — liquid can seep behind the panel and damage the electronics.
Cleaning the Vent and Grease Filter
If your JennAir built-in microwave is installed over a cooktop (over-the-range style) or has a ventilation function, it contains a grease filter:
- Locate the grease filter on the underside of the microwave. It is usually a mesh screen that slides or snaps out.
- Soak the filter in hot water with a tablespoon of dish soap and a tablespoon of baking soda for 15 minutes.
- Scrub gently with a soft brush, rinse, and allow to dry completely before reinstalling.
- Replace the grease filter entirely if it is damaged, discolored, or does not come clean after soaking.
What Not to Use
- Abrasive pads or steel wool — they scratch the stainless steel interior
- Oven cleaner — it is too harsh for microwave interiors and leaves toxic residue
- Bleach — can damage the interior finish and leave fumes
