JennAir ventilation hoods — including wall mount, island, and perimeter styles — use grease filters and optional charcoal filters. Learn the cleaning schedule and replacement process.
Types of Filters in JennAir Ventilation Systems
JennAir ventilation hoods use two types of filters depending on your installation:
- Grease filters (baffle or mesh) — these are standard on all JennAir hoods. Baffle filters are made of stainless steel and use angled channels to capture grease. Mesh filters are aluminum screens layered together. Both types are reusable and need regular cleaning.
- Charcoal (carbon) filters — used only in recirculating (ductless) installations where the hood does not vent to the outside. These filters absorb odors and are not washable — they must be replaced periodically.
Cleaning Grease Filters — Monthly
- Turn off the ventilation hood and allow it to cool if it was recently in use.
- Locate the filter release mechanism. On most JennAir hoods, the filters slide or snap into rails on the underside of the hood. Press the release tab or slide the filter toward you to remove it.
- Fill a sink or basin with hot water, a few drops of dish soap, and a quarter cup of baking soda.
- Submerge the filters and soak for 15 to 30 minutes. For heavily soiled filters, soak longer.
- Scrub with a non-abrasive brush or sponge to remove grease buildup. An old toothbrush works well for baffle filter channels.
- Rinse thoroughly under hot running water.
- Allow the filters to air dry completely before reinstalling. Reinstalling wet filters can cause water to drip onto the cooktop.
Can You Dishwasher the Grease Filters?
JennAir stainless steel baffle filters are generally dishwasher safe — place them on the bottom rack and run a normal cycle. However, aluminum mesh filters may discolor in the dishwasher due to the alkaline detergent. Check your owner’s manual for your specific model’s recommendation. If in doubt, hand wash.
Replacing Charcoal Filters
If your JennAir ventilation hood is installed in recirculating mode:
- Charcoal filters are typically located above the grease filters or behind a panel on the top of the hood.
- Remove the grease filters first to access the charcoal filters.
- The charcoal filters usually twist-lock or snap into holders. Turn counterclockwise or press the release tab to remove.
- Install new charcoal filters in the same position and orientation.
- JennAir recommends replacing charcoal filters every 3 to 6 months, depending on cooking frequency. If you notice lingering cooking odors in the kitchen despite the hood running, the charcoal filters are due for replacement.
Additional Maintenance
- Wipe the hood exterior with a stainless steel cleaner and soft cloth weekly to prevent grease film buildup.
- Clean the fan blower annually — if you have access to the blower housing (in the hood or in-line), vacuum dust and grease from the fan blades.
- Check the duct connection annually — ensure the duct is secure and there are no gaps where grease-laden air could leak into the cabinet space.
