How to Maintain Proper Humidity in a JennAir Wine Storage Unit 1

Correct humidity levels protect corks from drying out and prevent mold growth. Learn how to monitor and maintain humidity in your JennAir wine cooler.

Why Humidity Matters for Wine Storage

Humidity plays a critical role in wine preservation. When humidity is too low (below 50%), natural corks dry out, shrink, and allow air into the bottle — oxidizing the wine and ruining it. When humidity is too high (above 80%), mold can grow on corks and labels, and the interior of the wine cooler can develop unpleasant musty odors. The ideal range for wine storage humidity is 55% to 75%.

How JennAir Wine Coolers Manage Humidity

JennAir wine coolers use a compressor-based cooling system that naturally removes some moisture from the air during cooling cycles, similar to a standard refrigerator. However, JennAir units are designed to cycle less aggressively than a kitchen refrigerator, which helps maintain higher humidity levels suitable for wine. Some models include humidity management features such as a humidity tray or a charcoal filter that moderates moisture levels.

Monitoring Humidity

Most JennAir wine coolers do not have a built-in humidity display. To monitor humidity levels:

  1. Purchase a small, battery-powered digital hygrometer designed for wine cellars or cigar humidors. These are inexpensive and widely available.
  2. Place it inside the wine cooler on a middle shelf where it is visible through the glass door.
  3. Check the reading periodically. It is normal for humidity to fluctuate during compressor cycles — look at the trend over several days rather than a single reading.

Increasing Humidity (If Too Dry)

If your hygrometer consistently reads below 50%:

  • Place a small open container of water on the bottom of the wine cooler. A shallow dish or bowl works. The water evaporates slowly and raises the ambient humidity inside the cabinet. Check and refill as needed.
  • Reduce door openings — every time the door opens, dry room air enters and moist air escapes. Organize your collection so frequently accessed bottles are near the front.
  • Check the door seal — a worn gasket allows dry air to leak in continuously. Inspect and replace if necessary.
  • Avoid storing the wine cooler near forced-air heating vents — heated air is very dry and will pull moisture from the unit.

Reducing Humidity (If Too High)

If humidity consistently exceeds 80%:

  • Remove any water containers you may have placed inside.
  • Check for standing water in the drip tray or at the bottom of the unit — a clogged drain can cause excess moisture.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation around the unit — JennAir built-in wine coolers vent through the toe-kick grille. If this area is blocked, the condenser cannot dissipate heat and moisture effectively.
  • Place silica gel packets or a small container of uncooked rice inside the cabinet as a moisture absorber. Replace or refresh monthly.

Signs of Humidity Problems

  • Dry, cracked, or shrunken corks — humidity too low for an extended period
  • Wine seeping past the cork — the cork has dried and lost its seal
  • Mold on labels, cork tops, or shelves — humidity too high
  • Musty smell when opening the door — excess moisture combined with organic material
  • Fog or condensation on the glass door interior — normal during brief temperature swings, but persistent condensation indicates a humidity or seal issue
