How to Defrost a JennAir Freezer Column Manually 1

Although JennAir freezer columns have automatic defrost, frost can accumulate in certain conditions. Learn when and how to manually defrost your unit.

Does a JennAir Freezer Column Need Manual Defrosting?

JennAir freezer columns are frost-free by design — they use an automatic defrost cycle that runs periodically to melt any frost on the evaporator coils. However, there are situations where frost or ice can accumulate beyond what the automatic cycle can handle:

  • The door was left ajar for an extended period, allowing humid air to enter
  • The door gasket is damaged, creating a continuous air leak
  • The defrost heater, defrost timer, or defrost thermostat has failed
  • Power outages interrupted the defrost cycle repeatedly

When frost buildup becomes visible on the interior walls or the evaporator (behind the back panel), and the automatic defrost cycle is not clearing it, manual defrosting is necessary.

Preparing for Manual Defrost

  1. Remove all food — transfer items to a cooler with ice packs, a second freezer, or insulated bags. Work quickly to keep food frozen.
  2. Turn off the freezer — unplug it or turn off the circuit breaker.
  3. Remove shelves, drawers, and bins — take everything out to provide access to all interior surfaces and to prevent damage from melting ice.
  4. Prepare for water — place towels on the floor around the base of the freezer column. Place a shallow baking pan on the floor of the freezer to catch melting ice.

Defrosting Methods

Method 1: Air Defrost (Safest)

Simply leave the freezer door open and let room-temperature air melt the ice. This is the safest method but the slowest — it can take 8 to 12 hours depending on the amount of frost. Place a fan in front of the open door to speed the process.

Method 2: Hot Water Method (Faster)

  1. Boil a large pot of water.
  2. Place the pot on a thick towel or trivet on the floor of the freezer (never directly on the surface).
  3. Close the door.
  4. The steam from the hot water will accelerate frost melting. Replace the water as it cools — typically every 20 to 30 minutes.
  5. Most frost will be loosened within one to two hours.

What NOT to Do

  • Do not use a hair dryer — the heat can warp plastic components, damage seals, and create an electrical hazard around water
  • Do not chip or scrape ice with metal tools — you can puncture the evaporator coils or damage the interior lining
  • Do not pour boiling water directly onto frost — the thermal shock can crack interior panels

After Defrosting

  1. Wipe all interior surfaces dry with clean towels.
  2. Clean the interior with a baking soda and water solution to remove any odors.
  3. Reinstall shelves, drawers, and bins.
  4. Restore power and set the temperature to 0 degrees Fahrenheit.
  5. Wait until the freezer reaches target temperature (approximately 4 to 6 hours) before returning food.
  6. If frost returns within a few weeks, the automatic defrost system has a failed component — have a technician inspect the defrost heater, thermostat, and timer.
