When a JennAir dishwasher displays an error code, it provides a starting point for diagnosis. This guide covers the most common codes and what they mean.
How JennAir Dishwasher Error Codes Work
JennAir dishwashers display error codes as a combination of a letter and a number (or two numbers) on the control panel display. Some models use a series of blinking lights instead of an alphanumeric display. These codes indicate which system or component has detected a fault. Knowing what the code means helps you determine whether the issue is something you can resolve yourself or requires professional service.
Common Error Codes and Solutions
F1 E1 — Water Temperature Sensor Fault
The water temperature sensor (thermistor) is reading an out-of-range value. This can be caused by a faulty sensor or a wiring issue between the sensor and the control board.
- Try resetting the dishwasher by turning off the breaker for 60 seconds and restoring power.
- If the code returns, the thermistor likely needs replacement — a relatively inexpensive part but requires disassembly of the sump area.
F2 E2 — User Interface Communication Error
The control panel (user interface board) cannot communicate with the main control board. This can result from a power surge, loose ribbon cable, or a failed board.
- Perform a breaker reset.
- If the code persists, the ribbon cable between the two boards may be loose. A technician can reseat or replace it.
F5 E1 — Door Not Latching
The dishwasher detects that the door is not fully latched. The cycle will not start until the latch engages.
- Confirm the door is closing completely — check that nothing on the top rack is preventing the door from shutting.
- Inspect the door latch for damage or debris.
- If the latch clicks but the error persists, the latch switch or latch assembly may need replacement.
F6 E4 — Water Supply Issue
The dishwasher is not filling with enough water within the time allowed.
- Check that the water supply valve under the sink is fully open.
- Inspect the water inlet hose for kinks.
- Clean the inlet screen — turn off the water supply, disconnect the hose from the dishwasher inlet valve, and clean the small mesh screen at the connection point.
- If the water supply is fine, the water inlet valve itself may have failed.
F8 E1 — Slow Drain
Water is not draining fast enough during the drain cycle.
- Clean the filter assembly.
- Check the drain hose for kinks or obstructions.
- Clear the garbage disposal or air gap.
- See the full drain troubleshooting guide for detailed steps.
F9 E1 — Long Drain (Drain Not Completing)
The dishwasher has been attempting to drain for an extended period without success. This is similar to F8 E1 but more severe — the drain pump may have failed or an obstruction is completely blocking the drain path.
Resetting Error Codes
Most JennAir dishwasher error codes can be cleared by pressing “Cancel” twice quickly and then pressing “Start.” If the underlying issue is resolved, the code will not return. For persistent codes, a breaker reset (60 seconds off, then restore) clears the control board memory. If a code returns after reset and the obvious causes have been addressed, professional diagnosis is recommended.
