Hazard
An electrical failure in the relay — the component that turns on the refrigerator's compressor — can cause overheating and pose a serious fire hazard.
On March 5, 2009, Maytag Corporation and the CPSC announced a recall of approximately 1.6 million refrigerators sold under the Maytag, JennAir, Amana, Admiral, Magic Chef, Performa, and Crosley brands. The recall addressed a defect in the compressor start relay that could overheat and pose a fire hazard.
At the time of the recall, Maytag had received 41 reports of refrigerator relay ignition, including 16 reports of property damage ranging from smoke damage to extensive kitchen damage.
The recall covered side-by-side and top-freezer refrigerators in black, bisque, white, and stainless steel finishes. An August 2009 expansion added approximately 46,000 additional refrigerators.
