Hazard
Switches located too close to the gas tubing leading to the grill burner can cause electrical arcing that ignites leaking gas, posing a fire hazard.
On November 18, 2004, Maytag Corporation and the CPSC announced a voluntary recall of approximately 1,170 JennAir model JGD8348CDP built-in downdraft gas cooktops. The recall addressed a design flaw in which the cooktop switches were located too close to the gas tubing serving the grill burner, allowing electrical arcing to ignite leaking gas.
Maytag received four reports of cooktops catching fire during use as a result of gas leaks. No injuries were reported at the time of recall.
The recalled cooktops were manufactured between January 1, 2004 and September 17, 2004, and sold at appliance stores nationwide from January 2004 through September 2004 for approximately $2,000. Affected serial numbers range from xxxxxxxEA through xxxxxxxER.
Consumers should immediately stop using the grill and the burners activated by the two left-hand controls. The center and right-hand burners can continue to be used. Contact Maytag (now Whirlpool) to schedule a free in-home repair.
